Admission Requirements

This course is not available to international students at the Melbourne campus in 2026.


Selection criteria

In order to be eligible for nomination for the Doctor of Science you must have a body of work that is an internationally recognised, significant and sustained original contribution to knowledge in one or more branches of learning and be either:
  • A graduate of La Trobe University;
  • Have been a salaried member of the academic staff of the University for at least 5 years;
  • Have graduated from another educational institution and have demonstrated a substantial contribution to research at La Trobe University as an adjunct or honorary member of staff for at least five years.

Following nomination, an application is made to the Higher Doctorates Committee which has the responsibility for recommending admission into the degree to the Chair of the Research and Graduate Studies Committee, a sub-committee of Academic Board.

In order to be considered for admittance into the Doctor of Science you must provide:
  • A detailed curriculum vitae and evidence of eligibility for admission;
  • A summary of your broad field of research;
  • A description of your achievements, including the extent to which your work contributed to the advancement of knowledge;
  • A summary of the academic significance and impact of the material to be submitted for the degree and how it provides evidence of your achievements.
