Learn the most up-to-date skills for the modern classroom. Understand the needs of diverse learners and gain the skills and experience to succeed in any classroom. You'll prepare for classroom teaching with extensive in-school experience and guidance from our highly experienced and dedicated teaching academics. Learn how to manage classrooms, design class plans, guide students, and create a safe and engaging learning space for your students.

We focus on practise-based learning and our students learn about creating relationships from day one. You'll be embedded in your community from your first semester and will be mentored by community leaders, allowing you to develop meaningful relationships with students, parents and the wider school community. You'll also be paired with a university-based mentor and a school-based mentor to ensure you have the support during your studies.

This government-funded program is specifically designed to address teacher shortages in regional, rural, and hard-to-staff schools. With flexible, accessible training and support, you'll get the opportunity to make an immediate impact in the classroom.

The course is designed to offer flexibility, allowing you to teach in schools while still studying full-time, so you can gain practical experience while advancing your education. You'll also benefit from 24/7 online access to course materials and the option of participating in workshops at your own pace.

Admission Requirements

This course is not available to international students online in 2026.


Prerequisites


Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a non-teaching discipline with a WAM or GPA above 65%.


Specialisation - compulsory: In a relevant discipline area for primary teaching as per the National Program Standards, the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).


Applicants will require at least one year of full-time equivalent study (in Australia, usually 8 units), at any year level, relevant to one or more areas of the primary school curriculum. These areas include:


  • Arts (dance, drama, music, media arts, or visual arts)
  • English (including literature studies or professional writing)
  • Health (including nursing, nutrition, medicine, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, podiatry, or other allied health disciplines)
  • Humanities and Social Sciences (history, geography, legal studies, politics, economics, or business)
  • Languages
  • Mathematics
  • Physical Education
  • Science (including biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, health sciences, psychological science, or engineering)
  • Technologies (including design and technologies or digital technologies)


Applicants intending to study this course in NSW (Sydney Campus) must also:


1. possess at least a Band 4 result in a prior HSC mathematics course, or


2. have undertaken at least 0.125 EFTSL (1 unit) of mathematics/numeracy in the prior bachelor degree or equivalent qualification, or


3. pass a bridging unit (in addition to the course units) that is benchmarked to a NSW Education Standards Authority HSC Band (see below)


Those students who do not meet this requirement can undertake a bridging course, Unilearn UNL31 Introductory Mathematics. Applicants who complete this course must submit a copy of their Unilearn Statement of Achievement and transcript with their application.
