Majority of International Students Are Happy to Study Online

61 percent of international students have expressed an interest in studying online due to the threat of coronavirus, according to a new QS survey.

Universities and business schools around the world have turned to online learning as a way to continue educating students during the coronavirus outbreak. Around the world, cities have been put on lockdown and mass gatherings have been banned, making in-person classes impossible.

While this is an unprecedented situation, there are encouraging signs that online education isn’t putting students off from applying to university. Only 39 percent of international students were completely opposed to the idea.

The survey also asked which other measures would students like to see universities introducing to tackle coronavirus. At least half of students said they would like to see the following changes:

  • Hand gel made readily available on campus
  • A 24-hour helpline set up for students to use
  • Ensure access to dedicated health professionals for students

41 percent of students also suggested that classes could be held in larger rooms, to minimize the risk of contact.

While coronavirus is likely to have wide-spread impacts across all areas of society, it’s encouraging to see many students are flexible enough to consider online learning. Even if students are having to change their study plans, the majority are merely planning to defer their studies by a year rather than give up on them entirely.
