The program was established with the founding of the Department of Arabic Language and Literature in the 1982/1983 academic year. There were two departments: one in the Faculty of Da'wah and Fundamentals of Religion in Beit Hanina, and the other in the Faculty of Arts for Women in Wadi al-Joz. Each department admitted between 30 and 35 students annually. In the 1986/1987 academic year, the department in the Faculty of Da'wah and Fundamentals of Religion was closed. In the 1996/1997 academic year, the co-educational Faculty of Arts in Beit Hanina was opened, following the formal and practical unification of the university's faculties. The department then admitted between 30 and 40 students annually. Since the 2006/2007 academic year, the department has been accepting between 60 and 70 students, while its second branch in Hind Al-Husseini for females accepts between 30 and 35 students. The department awards bachelor's and master's degrees in Arabic language and literature.

Admission Requirements
A student wishing to enroll in the department to obtain a Bachelor's degree in Arabic Language and Literature (as a single major, or as a minor) must meet the following conditions:
1- Obtaining a grade of (70%) or more in the General Secondary Education Certificate Examination, or as determined by the University Admissions Committee.
2- Obtaining a grade of (65%) or higher in each of the following courses:
A- Arabic language skills number (0400101) which is a mandatory university requirement.
B- The art of writing and expression No. (0401101) is a mandatory college requirement.
3- If the number of students applying to join the department exceeds its capacity, the principle of preference among applicants shall be applied, taking into account their grade averages in the two courses mentioned in the second condition above. If their averages are equal in the two courses mentioned in the second condition above, other academic indicators adopted by the department council in a special session held for this purpose shall be considered.
