The Department of Journalism, Public Relations and New Media educates writers, editors, photographers and public relations practitioners who shape and change the world through written and graphic communications. All students in the major are encouraged to write for a major publication within the university in order to build their portfolios and define their skills. Graduates of this major go on to: attend graduate school, work in news positions for print and online publications, work in public relations positions in PR agencies, businesses and governmental organizations, write freelance. A Public Relations concentration emphasizes the importance of branding and public image. Students gain extensive knowledge of the industry through portfolio-building classroom work and internships that offer a first-hand look at PR. Students are required to take 24 hours of core public relations courses and may mix and match six hours of upper level public relations and advertising electives.
