Chemistry is the study of the fundamental building blocks of life and nature. In this field, you'll examine components of the atom and learn how those atoms are bonded together to create materials that make up everyday life. Chemistry is often called the "central science" as one learns about atomic and sub-atomic particles from Physics while learning about the organic processes of nature from Biology. To provide a learning experience beyond the traditional classroom environment, the department promotes the involvement of undergraduates in research programs. The ACS Certified B.S. degree, as exemplified by the sample degree plan, satisfies all the general College of Arts and Sciences requirements for a B.S. degree with a major in chemistry and meets all the requirements for a professional degree as set forth by the American Chemical Society. This degree is recommended for those students who are considering a career in chemistry, especially those considering graduate study in any field of chemistry. Please read the notes in the course listings following the sample degree plan carefully. This degree plan is only an example. Some flexibility is available in scheduling many of the courses, but others are fairly rigid in their scheduling due to prerequisite considerations. Graduates of this major go on to: specialize in research and development, corporate jobs or quality control, attend medical school, dental school, pharmacy school, law school and graduate schools, and teach.
