Cost of Living
Cost of Living
at the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU), Crete
The cost of studying at HMU
makes it possible to experience a very good quality of life in one of the most
beautiful and most hospitable regions of Europe — at a price relatively lower
than many other big student cities. The combination of lively student life, the
relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle and the facilities of modernity of Crete make
it a particularly attractive location to live and study. The eleven academic departments
of HMU are located at Heraklion/main campus, and at the cities of Chania, Agios
Nikolaos, Heraklion, Rethymno and Sitia. Therefore there are five different
living environments for students, ranging from large urban centers to small
coastal towns — each providing a safe, friendly atmosphere and a strong feeling
of community.
Accommodation
Housing is usually the main
regular expense, however students have access to a broad spectrum of housing
possibilities that fit different financial situations and tastes.
Shared apartments are a popular and
affordable choice, especially among international students.
Private studios or one-bedroom apartments
are widely available across all HMU cities.
In terms of availability of
housing, the city of Heraklion provides the greatest number of options;
whereas, the cities of Chania and Rethymno and the coastal towns of Agios Nikolaos and
Sitia, provide a more peaceful, less hectic pace of life and are often located
close enough to the center of town so that students can easily walk to the
necessary services and leisure locations..
Food and
Everyday Living
Cretans are
famous for their delicious, locally grown food and for their adherence to the
Mediterranean diet, which is the healthiest diet in the world. Students who prefer to eat at home will be able to limit their
grocery bills by purchasing food at local markets. In addition, eating at cafes
or at traditional taverns is part of the daily routine of Cretan people and
also a great way to experience local customs.
Transportation
It is very easy and inexpensive
to get around. Public buses run throughout the cities and neighborhoods. Many
students prefer to walk or ride bicycles since distances are short and the
cities are small. Traveling between the campuses of HMU is also very easy, so
students can travel to different parts of the island during their studies.
Student
Lifestyle in Crete
Beyond the
financial aspects, HMU has a unique geographic distribution. Whether you are
studying in the dynamic city of Heraklion, the historic port city of Chania,
the intellectual and cultural city of Rethymno, or the coastal city of Agios
Nikolaos or Sitia, you will definitely experience a full immersion in a very
safe and welcoming and culturally rich environment, which supports both your
academic and personal development. With careful planning and access to University resources, students can expect to live comfortably in Crete on a monthly budget of €600–€800, depending on their housing choices and lifestyle.
