Department of Industrial Biotechnology at the Atta Ur Rahman School of Applied Biosciences (ASAB) NUST, offers a MS degree program in Industrial Biotechnology (IB). IB play an important role in maintaining competitiveness in global markets, where bio-based systems and processes are rapidly gaining strength and scale; and will play an essential part in the creation of a low-carbon knowledge-based economy. IB has significant economic and environmental benefits for the chemical industry. The market is projected to grow up to £360bn globally by 2025. The program was started in fall 2012 and has matured over a span of 5 years. It is a two years’ program with a total of 30 credit hour requirement for award of degree. The course work of Masters in Industrial Biotechnology has been designed keeping in view the vision of ASAB and NUST, which envisages the immediate, uplifting of the standard of postgraduate education in Pakistan, as well as remaining in pace with fast growing technological revolution. The courses included in the MS Industrial Biotechnology program are a fine blend of basic and applied biotechnological knowledge.

This program offers courses which are in line with those of leading educational institutions all over the world and which also conform to all standards of degree programs being conducted at other constituent colleges of NUST. It produces graduates who are trained with academic and research skills and the integration of both in industrial and service organizations. The postgraduate program in Industrial Biotechnology is intended to provide students with necessary knowledge, abilities and methods under special consideration of both requirements and changes in the vocational world so that they will be able to carry out professional work on a scientific basis, to critically classify scientific results and to act with responsibility.

Department of Industrial Biotechnology has recently introduced two knowledge areas including Applied Microbiology and Systems and Synthetic Biology, been an emerging scientific disciplines that deals with the applications of molecular biology to modify microorganisms, plants and animal cells by taking advantage from other related fields like physics, chemistry, mathematics and several domains like electrical engineering, computer sciences and the modeling and simulations
