The B.S. in Music Industry, the first such undergraduate program offered in Boston, is designed for students with an interest in fields such as artist management, the music products industry, the recording industry, arts administration, contracting and legal issues, and broadcast, mobile and on-line media technologies. The program includes music industry survey courses, business classes in the College of Business Administration, music theory, music history and music industry electives focusing on such topics as artist management, the music products industry, recording, and copyright law. All music industry majors are required to participate in one of the Music Department’s music ensembles for two semesters while enrolled in classes. Co-op is also an important component of the Music Industry concentration. Our students have accepted co-op positions at record labels, music publishing companies, radio stations, music product companies, tour promoters, and other music industry related fields in many different parts of the world. Outcomes: Students graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Music with concentration in Music Industry are expected to have acquired the following competencies: Music Industry Related Skills - To apply and analyze the basic copyright protections afforded to authors, publishers and master recording owners. To explain, critique, and apply industry-related contracts and agreements. To discuss the application of music industry services and products and identify demographic groups who would most benefit by access to the services and products, to assess the dynamic nature of the music industry. To assess issues that relate to revenue generation in the music industry, To identify and evaluate current established industry “players” and institutions and to envision future music industry trends and developments, To identify and assess creative talent, To create effective entrepreneurship plans in the music industry, To build and lead an effective team and to be able to collaborate effectively, To construct web sites and related means of digital access to intellectual property by applying knowledge of digital tools, To analyze a variety of expense and revenue streams associated with the production, publishing, distribution, licensing, and marketing of musical products, services and intellectual property, To demonstrate knowledge of theory and music notation to a level of competency that will allow the student to communicate in musical terms with professional musicians, To demonstrate knowledge of how musical elements shape the styles and effectiveness of different genres of music, Engage in in-depth critical listening of the music of important periods of music history in various cultural traditions and discuss aesthetic issues related to that music.
