The Cell and Molecular Biology Program Area (CMB) of the Biology Department is an important part of what made San Diego State the number one small research university in the United States. The CMB is recognized as one of the strongest research areas in the California State University system as measured by grant activity, faculty accomplishments, advanced degrees awarded, and success of its students. The mission and vision of the CMB Program is to provide excellence in research and education in cell and molecular biology. Our goal is to provide the best possible education to the next generation of scientists through research, teaching, mentoring, and service. San Diego State University (SDSU) offers a doctoral degree program in Biology in collaboration with the University of California, San Diego UCSD Division of Biological Sciences. This joint program involves research training under the supervision of participating SDSU Faculty, whose members are drawn from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Psychology. The faculty research interests address a wide range of biological questions and reflect the interdisciplinary nature of modern biology. Students will take graduate level courses from SDSU and UCSD in cell and molecular biology, genetics, ethics, and a choice of electives.
