Electrical engineers work in the frontier of high technology and solve problems through the skillful application of mathematics and science. They design innovative products such as cellular telephones, high definition TVs that show lifelike pictures, and imaging systems that allow physicians to look inside the human body without performing surgery. Electrical engineers also design systems for the generation and distribution of power that light our homes, operate our factories, and run our household appliances. Working in teams, electrical engineers fabricate complex, tiny components that are used in computers, sensors, stereo systems, weather satellites, automobiles, modern appliances, and automated factories. The curriculum for electrical engineering students is both interesting and challenging. Courses the first year include calculus, physics and chemistry. During the second and third year at SDSU, electrical engineering students are exposed to specific courses in the major. Upper division classes allow students to put theory into practice. Courses such as analog and digital circuit design, electronic materials, power systems, and electromagnetic will immerse students into the electrical engineering field. Career Opportunities: Engineers earn considerably more than other graduates who begin a career with a Bachelor of Science degree. Employment offers vary by region, company, and amount of experience. San Diego has many large telecommunications and electronics firms that employ electrical and computer engineers. Career Services at SDSU manages cooperative education and internship programs, helps students to improve their job-hunting skills, and provides opportunities for graduating students to interview with companies.
