The Master of Arts in English program at San Diego State University welcomes applicants aiming to study literature and cultural texts at advanced levels. Our M.A. Program is particularly well-suited for students who anticipate further graduate work in a literature or rhetoric Ph.D. program, or who intend to teach English at a community college. Our graduates also pursue careers in publishing. The two-year program offers students the opportunity to engage in dynamic seminars, to teach undergraduates, to obtain professional development training for academic conferences and publication and to network with contacts across the region. Leaders in their fields, our department’s cutting-edge professors specialize in American Literature, British Literature, Children’s Literature, Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, and Digital Humanities. Our graduates have found success not only in further graduate work and teaching, but also in publishing, editing, non-profit work, and legal professions, demonstrating that while our M.A. students study literature, they also learn skills that transfer beyond academia. The M.A. program includes a nine-unit specialization in one of five program areas: American literature, British literature, children’s literature, comparative literature, or rhetoric and writing.
