Shahjalal
University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet, was established in 1986.
It is Bangladesh's first science and technology university. The Department of
Mathematics at SUST is one of the university's pioneer departments, having been
established in 1990 as part of the School of Physical Sciences. Its academic
function began in 1991 with the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) with Honors in
Mathematics program. From the academic session 1993-1994, Mathematics
Department offered a one-year graduate program leading to the degree of Master
of Science (M.Sc.) in Mathematics.SUST'
undergraduate admissions committee usually admits 80 students per
academic year. Up until the 2020–2021 academic year, the department had
graduated around 2500 B.Sc. (Honors) students. Many of them are currently
working as university academics, researchers, or in other high-profile service
positions both at home and abroad. Furthermore, each year, a considerable
number of graduates are awarded scholarships to study at famous overseas
universities.
In accordance with
university standards, the department conducts academic activities based on a
syllabus structure until the 2019–2020 academic year. The Outcome-Based
Education (OBE) curriculum applies to students starting the program in
2020–2021. Under the direction of SUST's Institutional Quality Assurance Cell
(IQAC), the department has designed the OBE curriculum for the current session
(2022-2023) based on the "Bangladesh National Qualifications Framework
(BNQF) for Higher Education" and the university's "Semester System
Ordinance." The program is now divided into eight semesters, with courses
organized in accordance with the International Standard Classification of
Education (ISCED-F 2013, UNESCO, Institute of Statistics, Canada, Montreal). As
a result, the courses are divided into core, general education, electives, and
optional categories.
The program
comprises general education courses in English, Computer Science and
Engineering, Micro and Macroeconomics, Statistics, and Physics in addition to
the core subjects. The degree requires 145 credits to be completed. The
program's goal is to adopt the newly established OBE curriculum and generate
graduates capable of tackling the new challenges in science and engineering.
