Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet, was established in 1986. It is Bangladesh's first science and technology university. The Department of Mathematics at SUST is one of the university's pioneer departments, having been established in 1990 as part of the School of Physical Sciences. Its academic function began in 1991 with the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) with Honors in Mathematics program. SUST's undergraduate admissions committee usually admits 80 students per academic year. Up until the 2020–2021 academic year, the department had graduated around 2500 B.Sc. (Honors) students. Many of them are currently working as university academics, researchers, or in other high-profile service positions both at home and abroad. Furthermore, each year, a considerable number of graduates are awarded scholarships to study at famous overseas universities.

In cognizance of university standards, the department conducts academic activities based on a syllabus structure until the 2019–2020 academic years. The Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum applies to students starting the program in 2020–2021. Under the direction of SUST's Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), the department has designed the OBE curriculum for the session (2022-2023) and onwards based on the "Bangladesh National Qualifications Framework (BNQF) for Higher Education" and the university's "Semester System Ordinance." The program classified into eight semesters, with courses organized follwing the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED-F 2013, UNESCO, Institute of Statistics, Canada, Montreal). As a result, the courses are classified as core, general education, electives, and optional.

The program comprises general education courses in English, Computer Science and Engineering, Micro and Macroeconomics, Statistics, and Physics other than the core subjects. The degree requires the completion of 145 credits. The program's purpose is to implement the OBE curriculum and develop graduates capable of handling new challenges in science and engineering.
