Programme overview

Main Subject

Engineering - Chemical

Study Level

Masters

The Master of Science in Bioengineering is tailored for students who have a strong science background, and who would like the skills needed to develop materials and devices at the intersection of life science and engineering. A master’s in bioengineering prepares students to enter the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical device or life science industries. It will also prepare them for a Ph.D. in biology, bioengineering, or related field as well as preparation for other professional health careers. This interdisciplinary program focuses on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine methods to improve healthcare. The bioengineering graduate program builds on a foundation of molecular biology and chemistry while also adding elements of bioengineering design. Students may elect to choose thesis or non-thesis options, depending on their professional goals. For those who select the non-thesis option, there is a project option which gives the student research experience for course credit. Graduates of this program will be well positioned to succeed with careers in pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies in addition to biomedical research and regulatory institutions. The bioengineering program is a blend of both engineering courses and strong science courses (chemistry and chemical biology). The bioengineering program places an emphasis on applications of tissue engineering which includes the development of new tissues or organs from cells and scaffolds. Bioengineering Careers: research scientist, clinical scientist, quality control analyst, research associate science/medical writer, process development engineer. Bioengineering Research Areas: tissue engineering, biomaterials cell biology, physiology biochemistry/chemical biology, molecular biology.
