Discover how to become a mental health worker on our MNurs Child and Mental Health degree. You'll gain a broad set of skills that will allow you to provide evidence-based and compassionate care in many settings.
Southampton is a world-leading provider of nursing training, and you'll be supported by exceptional researchers and educators.
This course will prepare you to work in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). You will also be able to work in settings supporting unwell children and clients experiencing mental health need. You'll study:
  • the science that underpins nursing
  • the evidence base behind the nurse's role
  • how nurses promote health and help people to maintain health and well-being
You'll develop practice skills through a range of nursing placements, and your learning will be further supported through simulated practice and clinical skills teaching. You will also learn with and from students of other health professions in both theory and practice.
Practice placements will normally be undertaken in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight in a mixture of hospital and community settings across 6 trusts.
To prepare you for your future role, the programme will help you to:
  • develop skills in assessment, decision-making and managing complexity across a range of healthcare environments
  • understand the nature of health needs within a global context
  • become confident in embracing the technology and innovation that will be needed to meet people's future health needs
  • prepare for a future nursing leadership role in clinical or academic settings
When you finish your degree, you'll be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a registered nurse (child) and as a registered nurse (mental health).
