Course summary How do machines learn from data, recognise what they see and make decisions? And how can we design artificial intelligence that can tackle problems we haven’t solved yet? If you want to understand how AI works and develop the technical skills to build intelligent systems, MSc Artificial Intelligence is for you. At Southampton, you’ll build a strong grounding in the foundations of artificial intelligence before exploring emerging and specialist areas. Study topics including intelligent agents, audio AI, hardware acceleration, computer vision, deep learning technologies, natural language processing and multi-modal AI, with opportunities to shape the course around your interests. Your learning is connected directly to active AI research. Southampton researchers bring their expertise into your modules across areas including computer vision, robotics and machine learning, helping you engage with the challenges and ideas shaping the field now. This is AI you’ll put into practice. Through lectures, seminars and computer-based practical work, you’ll learn how to design, analyse, implement and evaluate intelligent systems. You’ll also explore the legal and ethical questions surrounding AI and develop the ability to communicate complex technical ideas clearly. With 97% of our Computer Science research rated world leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021), you’ll study in a research environment focused on advancing computing and its real-world applications. Key features of this course • Build strong foundations in AI.** Explore fundamental approaches to artificial intelligence alongside machine learning and intelligent agents, giving you the technical grounding to take on more specialist topics. • Shape your own AI journey.** Choose from specialist areas including computer vision, natural language processing, deep learning, data mining, multimodal AI, speech AI, algorithmic game theory, human-robot interaction and AI hardware acceleration. • Turn algorithms into working systems.** Develop practical experience through computer-based learning, laboratory work, design exercises and individual and group projects. You’ll build skills in designing, implementing, analysing and verifying AI solutions. • Explore AI from different angles.** Go beyond algorithms to investigate areas such as intelligent agents, robotics, knowledge graphs, cyber security and machine learning, giving you opportunities to understand how AI connects with different technologies and problems. • Work in specialist computing spaces.** Access facilities including the Software Projects Laboratory and David Barron computing laboratory, designed to support computer science and software engineering project work. • Take on your own research challenge.** Complete an independent research project over the summer, working with a supervisor to investigate an AI topic in depth and bringing your findings together in a 15,000-word dissertation. Your future career • AI needs people who can do more than use existing tools. It needs people who understand how intelligent systems work, can analyse their limitations and can build new solutions when the problem changes. • You’ll graduate with specialist AI knowledge alongside skills in research, critical thinking, programming, problem-solving, communication, teamwork and adaptability. • Career paths directly connected with the course include machine learning engineer, robotics engineer, AI research scientist, natural language processing engineer, AI software developer and AI product manager. Wider opportunities include data science, AI consultancy and technology risk. • Whether you move into industry, develop new AI applications or continue into further research, you’ll leave Southampton ready to question how intelligent systems work and build what comes next. Further information • This is a one-year, full-time MSc based at Highfield Campus. The first 9 months focus on taught modules and preparation for your research project. During the final 3 months, you’ll work independently on your project and dissertation with one-to-one supervision. • The programme is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). • Applicants normally need an upper 2:1 degree, with a mark of 65% or above, in a relevant computing discipline, together with appropriate previous study in mathematics, programming and artificial intelligence, robotics, algorithms or machine learning.”
