Course summary
What happens when engineering, biology and medicine work together to solve healthcare challenges? How can engineering help make everyday life easier for someone living with a health condition?
If you want to develop technologies that can improve health and wellbeing, then MSc Biomedical Engineering is for you. You could develop assistive devices to restore movement, or improve diagnoses using health monitoring, advanced imaging and wearable technology.
Choose the direction that interests you most. You can follow a broad biomedical engineering programme or choose to focus on one of five pathways: musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, imaging, diagnostic systems or audiology. Optional modules give you further opportunities to shape your studies around your career ambitions.
Biomedical engineering is collaborative by nature. You’ll learn alongside expertise from engineering, medicine, health sciences, biological sciences and computer science, helping you understand healthcare challenges from different perspectives. You’ll also consider the ethical, safety and societal implications of developing technologies that affect people’s health.
You'll bring everything together through an original research project, where you’ll apply your engineering expertise to a complex biological or healthcare problem and develop your own ideas for what could work better.
Key features of this course
**Bring engineering and medicine together.** Develop the scientific and engineering knowledge to understand human biological systems and create solutions for healthcare challenges.
**Choose your specialist direction.** Follow pathways in musculoskeletal engineering, cardiovascular engineering, imaging, diagnostic systems or audiology, or use optional modules to build a broader programme around your interests.
**Explore technology with the patient in mind.** Investigate technologies including prostheses, artificial organs, biomedical devices, imaging and monitoring systems while considering safety, ethics and the wider impact of medical innovation.
**Learn through real problems.** Take part in problem-driven seminars, site and hospital visits, and workshops or training sessions involving experts from industry and national laboratories.
**Work across disciplines.** Draw on expertise from teams of engineers, scientists, healthcare professionals and other specialists, reflecting the collaborative way biomedical technologies are developed in practice.
**Take on your own research challenge.** Spend the final four months completing an original research project. Previous areas have included designing joint replacement devices and developing new imaging methods to investigate bone or lung disease.
Your future career
Better healthcare technology needs engineers who can understand both complex technical problems and the people those technologies are designed to support.
You’ll graduate with biomedical engineering expertise alongside skills in research, critical thinking, communication, teamwork, creativity and problem-solving.
Career paths directly connected to the course include biomedical engineer, prosthetic device engineer, rehabilitation engineer, biomechanical engineer, biomaterials engineer, physiological modeller and research scientist. Graduates can also use their analytical and technical skills across wider engineering, technology and research roles.
Whether you want to develop new medical devices, improve existing healthcare technologies or continue into research, you’ll leave Southampton ready to turn engineering knowledge into solutions with the potential to improve people’s health and wellbeing.
Further information
This is a one-year, full-time MSc based at Highfield Campus. You’ll study compulsory and optional modules across two semesters before spending the final four months on your independent research project.
The programme is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) as meeting the academic requirement for Further Learning for Chartered Engineer registration. Full CEng registration requirements also depend on your undergraduate qualification.
The course is designed primarily for graduates in engineering, mathematics or physical sciences who want to specialise in biomedical engineering or develop their professional expertise.
