Modules in this course cover human health and wellbeing, physiology, infection, and the biology of molecules and cellular systems, including recent research breakthroughs related to vaccine development, neurodegenerative diseases and metabolic diseases (e.g. diabetes). Students will develop the research and analysis, presentation, communication, problem-solving and writing skills that are essential in all employment sectors. The first year integrates core syllabus of biology, biochemistry and genetics to form the basis for later specialisation. In the second and third years, core modules include molecular cell biology, human and animal physiology, immunology and epidemiology, infection and tropical diseases. Students can choose from a wide range of optional modules such as oncology or synthetic biology, or those covering areas outside science such as business or languages. In the third year, students will complete a challenging full-time research project on an area of particular academic interest. This may be lab-based, involve data analysis or fieldwork. Students will complete a further extended research project in the fourth year, either in the UK or abroad, an industrial placement.
