Our MSc in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Transition will equip you with the skills and knowledge to have a real impact as a leader in renewable energy and energy transition, gaining the tools to understand the wider systems that rely on energy and look for solutions beyond the simple decarbonisation of existing activities.


This programme is open to all graduates and those interested in acquiring a broad knowledge of renewable energy systems and the issues surrounding them. You do not need to be an engineer to apply for this master’s programme and is suitable to professionals from a wide variety of academic backgrounds who want to work in the industry.


You will be actively surrounded by a research relevant environment, ensuring your studies remain innovative and industry focused. The Orkney campus, where this programme is delivered on, is host to the Transition Lab, an “action research” group which works with a range of research organisations, businesses, and community groups to move Scottish islands towards decarbonisation through the Islands Centre for Net Zero.

  • Comprehensive, customisable curriculum: Provides opportunity to specialise in several areas through optional courses, including environmental processes, oceanography and climate change, sustainability and adaption.
  • Blend of skills: A curriculum based on a mix of mandatory and elective courses provide supporting knowledge and skills on energy transition, technologies of renewable energy generation, the importance of energy efficiency, policies, economics, project finance and environmental science.
  • Applied learning: Undertake ILES Environment Dissertation while applying skills, techniques and knowledge to fine-tune expertise going into the industry.
