Overview

Our complex world needs professionals who can understand human development and experiences. Psychology uses scientific methods to gain insights into a person's motivations, perceptions, and behaviour. It can make a significant contribution to society across many different areas of life, from education and health to the economy and crime.

The BSc (Hons)Psychology programme at Heriot-Watt University is a four-year undergraduate degree that will equip you with a broad-based understanding of this dynamic field. The programme is structured to provide foundational knowledge in core areas of psychology, as well as opportunities to develop skills in research methods and analysis.

Our Psychology degree focuses on problems in the real world, considering how an understanding of people and their behaviours can help us to address them. As a career-focused university, our BSc Psychology is designed to provide you with practical skills that you can apply in professional roles. This programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), providing the necessary undergraduate training if you are considering becoming a professional psychologist.

Heriot-Watt is highly regarded for its psychology degrees, and you will be taught by a passionate community of research-active academics, gaining advanced skills in research, data gathering and analysis, problem-solving, teamwork and leadership.

You’ll benefit from the industry relevance of the programme, which will set you up for life after graduation. Upon completion, you’ll have the relevant knowledge and skills to apply to a range of careers, including those in the field of psychology.

Your learning environment

The BSc Psychology degree is taught by the industry experience and research of our respected faculty, who bring the subject to life through a dynamic mix of lectures and tutorials. This will allow you to get to know and build relationships with the teaching staff, academics, and your peers. You will be assessed by a mixture of coursework and exams. You’ll receive support and feedback from staff throughout the degree.

You will also benefit from our specialist research labs, which facilitate the work of academics and students alike. You’ll have the chance to get involved in research being conducted by academic staff and PhD students through our Voluntary Research Assistant scheme. And there are opportunities to hear about cutting-edge research in our regular Psychology Research seminar series.

Customise your learning

The Psychology degree offers specialised courses in areas such as cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, social psychology, health psychology, and more. Year one of the degree focuses on an introduction to psychology, research methods, and academic skills. Year two and three then cover more specific topics, such as developmental and cognitive psychology.

In year four, you’ll undertake an independent research project alongside your chosen courses from a range of options. That means you’ll have the opportunity to focus on the areas of psychology that interest you the most. Y ou’ll be required to demonstrate your mastery of the subject area by identifying and undertaking an appropriate area of research and presenting your results effectively by written and verbal means.

Our Psychology degree can be combined with Economics , Marketing , or Management . This allows you to graduate with a deep understanding of two disciplines and the many impactful links between them.

Plus, our BSc Psychology programme offers you the opportunity to travel to Dubai or Malaysia to experience studying psychology in a different environment and culture. You can travel for one semester or one academic year, and we recommend that you do this in year two or the first part of year three.
