Our MSc in Quantum Technologies will provide you with with the necessary training and skills in the growing field of quantum technologies, giving you the theoretical background and practical skills required to undertake a career which encompasses future technologies for communication, computing, and sensing that benefit from uniquely quantum effects.

This programme is aimed at Physics and other STEM graduates an opportunity to build upon existing quantum mechanics knowledge.

Heriot-Watt University is top in Scotland for Physics research, with 97% of its research classed as world-leading (4*) in the REF 2021 results. The university also received the Queens Anniversary Prize in 2021, the highest honour for universities in the UK, in recognition of our research in Photonics."

Reasons to study:

  • Industry-relevant: Hands-on approach provides students with ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical experiments, and gain experience in using industrial-grade equipment. Opportunity to work on real-world problems, and work across disciplines to deliver practical solutions with global impact in our state-of-the-art GRID facility.
  • Comprehensive, customisable curriculum: Provides the opportunity to focus on specific interests with two optional courses between Condensed Matter, Quantum Devices, Nanophotonics, Quantum Theory and Solid-State Physics, Photonic Sensors, and more.
  • Blend of skills: Skills and knowledge to prepare you for a wide range of technical and managerial careers across the sector, including product engineering, data analysis and industrial or academic research.
  • Expert faculty: Learn from research-active physicists, scientists, and academics, passionate in their fields and provide you with insight into emerging topics in quantum technology, by relating taught material to their own research.
  • Supported learning: Delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and laboratory practicals, gaining important practical, hands-on experience in our state-of-the-art laboratory environment, and be supported throughout by friendly and helpful staff.
  • Professional accreditation: Accredited by the Institute of Physics (IOP) for the purpose of meeting the educational requirement for Chartered Physicist.
