The Department of Physics at Abilene Christian University offers two cooperative degrees in association with the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). This cooperative program enables a student to attain both a B.S. in Engineering Science from ACU and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering or Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering from UTA within five years. The student will receive ACU's Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Engineering Science after the successful completion of three years at ACU and one year of specified engineering courses at UTA. Courses taken at ACU to satisfy this degree also satisfy part of the requirements toward a degree in engineering at UTA in electrical engineering (BSEE) or industrial and manufacturing systems engineering (BSIE), thus enabling students to complete both the ACU degree and the UTA degree within five years. The ACU-UTA cooperative program in engineering offers students the opportunity to take advantage of the strengths of each of the participating schools, resulting in a solid well-rounded, Christ-centered education in engineering. Graduates from these programs will be well-prepared to pursue employment in industry or to pursue graduate degrees in engineering or other fields. The undergraduate programs in electrical and industrial engineering at UTA are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Concentrations: B.S. in Engineering Science with B.S. in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) B.S. in Engineering Science with B.S. in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering (BSIE) Student Opportunities Our engineering faculty is active researchers in their fields. They are respected internationally for their work, yet enjoy teaching and mentoring students. And with an average class size of ten students, you’ll get to know your professor well - often with an opportunity to become a colleague. Involvement in the process of research and discovery sets ACU apart from engineering majors at other universities. Our students see abstract concepts at work in real-world scenarios, and witness the fun and excitement of science in action through positions as research assistants with Dr. Tim Head in his Phonon Imaging Lab, Dr. Josh Willis and his LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) research work, and research in biomedical engineering, as well as opportunities for summer internships in national laboratories. At ACU, the study of engineering is dedicated to glorifying the Creator. We admire God’s handiwork in the laws of the universe, and seek to understand and apply those principles to solve big problems while improving the lives of people around the world. Part of that commitment means action, and as a student in our engineering program you may have the opportunity to travel to Haiti to dig wells and provide clean drinking water for villages still struggling to recover from the 2010 earthquake, design a sustainable irrigation system for communities in Honduras, or work at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston to help advance treatment for one of the world’s most deadly diseases.
