The Master of Urban Design program at ITB is a postgraduate program aimed at producing professionals in urban design who can address the challenges of modern cities. With an interdisciplinary approach, the program integrates knowledge from architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, transportation, and urban policy to create innovative, sustainable, and contextually relevant design solutions. Its primary focus is to equip students with technical, analytical, and conceptual skills in designing public spaces, urban infrastructure, and inclusive urban policies with a strong emphasis on sustainability. This program is designed to adapt to the ever-evolving urban landscape, both nationally and globally. Rapid urbanization, digital technology advancements, and environmental issues are among the key challenges in urban design. To tackle these issues, ITB’s Master of Urban Design program emphasizes project-based learning, with studio courses as the core of its curriculum. In these studios, students apply theoretical and methodological knowledge to real-world cases while considering social, economic, and environmental factors. Beyond the studio-based approach, the curriculum integrates cutting-edge technologies such as 3D modeling, spatial analysis, and simulation tools to enhance urban planning and design processes. Students are also encouraged to engage in research, industry collaborations, and partnerships with government agencies and local communities to develop innovative urban solutions. The teaching methodology prioritizes active student participation, following the Learner-Centered Education (LCE) model, which fosters discussions, presentations, and data-driven design experimentation. To ensure graduates are well-prepared for professional careers, the program emphasizes communication and collaboration skills within multidisciplinary teams. Students are trained to think critically when solving urban challenges and to develop a global perspective while remaining mindful of local contexts. The curriculum also supports academic progression by providing opportunities for students to pursue further studies or careers as urban designers, design consultants, researchers, or professionals in both the public and private sectors. With a vision to be a leading and adaptive program in urban design education and practice, ITB’s Master of Urban Design program continues to innovate in teaching and research.
