Across the globe, preservation designers spearhead the adaptive reuse of historically significant buildings, repurposing them to meet contemporary and future needs while honoring their past to create a richer local fabric. As a preservation design student at SCAD, you will develop the skills and strategies to lead the transformation of these burgeoning communities via a studio-based and digital-focused curriculum that draws directly from the university’s international recognition as a model for preservation and design. At SCAD, an expansive set of majors and minors offer preservation design students the opportunity to widen their skillset or pursue diverging career paths. As a preservation design student, you can explore courses that compliment your studies in programs like urban design, architectural history, sustainability, interior design, museum studies, and more. Expand your understanding of the built environment and creative reuse of historic buildings further by pursuing a double major or minor.

While not required of most applicants, submission of GRE scores is strongly encouraged for applicants to architectural history, art history, business design and arts leaderships and cinema studies. Additionally, if your undergraduate program doesn't meet certain requirements regarding accreditation and/or approval by the U.S. Department of Education, GRE scores may be required. Please discuss this with your admission adviser to be sure what will be required of you. Acceptance into graduate programs at SCAD is based heavily on the portfolio. Unlike undergraduate portfolios, graduate program portfolios are required for acceptance and must be program-specific. Each program has its preferred types of portfolios.
