Postgraduate UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung was established in 1997 based on the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Education, Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. At the beginning of its establishment, the Postgraduate had one study program, namely Islamic Religious Studies (IAI) with several concentrations. In subsequent developments in accordance with the nomenclature issued by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Postgraduate UIN Bandung divided the IAI study program into several study programs, one of which was Family Law.
The Masters Program in Family Law is part of the Islamic Law Science competency. It was established in 2012 (Decree of the Director General of Islamic Education No. 1424, dated August 31, 2012). Since January 16, 2015, the Masters Program in Family Law (Akhwal Syahsiyyah) Postgraduate Program of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung has been accredited B. (Decree of BAN-PT Number 014 of 2015, dated January 16, 2015) Although the accreditation status is already B, meaning good, but if seen from the target to be achieved, namely superior and competitive, then the accreditation status of this study program should be A. Because accreditation A will be an indicator of excellence.
The Family Law Program was established in 2012 with a Decree from the Director General of Higher Education No. 1425 dated August 31, 2012. The purpose of establishing this study program is to develop scientific knowledge in the field of Islamic Family Law as well as to develop formal education at the master's level as a continuation of the existing educational program in the undergraduate program. This development is in line with the development of Islamic Family Law and the practice of Islamic Family Law in general, so that the existence of this study program is very relevant to efforts to fulfill the need for competent and reliable human resources in the field of Islamic Family Law in particular and in the field of sharia science and law in general.
For more than a decade, this program has been running and has succeeded in achieving a number of important achievements, including in terms of BAN-PT accreditation, namely achieving Accreditation B for the first time in 2015, then successfully maintaining Accreditation B in 2020. The 2020 accreditation was determined by BAN-PT through letter number 2852 and is valid until May 5, 2025. Another achievement is that up to the 9th batch, this study program has succeeded in producing more than 200 alumni graduates. Most of its alumni, about half, have careers as lecturers at state and private universities, as registrars, and education personnel at the ministries of religion spread across Indonesia. A number of other alumni are spread out as practitioners in the legal sector, both lawyers, consultants and entrepreneurs.
