Yale?s doctoral Program in Film and Media Studies quickly achieved the international stature it enjoys today. Building on a core faculty that had long overseen an impressive undergraduate major, the graduate program attracted incoming faculty who were eager to help shape it. The quality of the students who have applied has been superior, and the large majority of those selected have chosen to study here. Fifty students have completed, or are in the midst of, their degrees. Our alumni hold positions at a range of institutions, including universities with major graduate programs, and several have already seen their revised dissertations published as books by important presses. Program of courses: Fourteen term-courses will be the norm, taken over a two year period. In some cases a candidate may be allowed to take up to two courses in the third year of study while preparing for the oral examination. Requirements in Film and Media Studies: Six courses, 1. FILM 601 Films and Their Study (offered every other Fall term), 2. FILM 603 Film Historiography (offered every other Fall term), 3. Four additional seminars in Film Studies, Requirements in American Studies: Eight courses total, 1. AMST 600 American Scholars (Satisfactory grade), 2. Seven other courses in AMST or with AMST cross list 3. Additional third year prospectus workshop AMST 902
