The Master of Environmental Management curriculum draws from coursework in the natural and social sciences and focuses on the complex relationships among science, management, and policy. The purpose of the program is to provide students with a scientific understanding of ecological and social systems that can be applied in a policy or management context. Students are also expected to hone their capacities as leaders and managers through summer internships, professional skills courses, and other opportunities. The MEM curriculum is flexible enough to allow students to tailor their course of study in a way that builds on their interests and experiences and that meets their specific career goals. MEM students can choose from more than one hundred courses offered by F&ES faculty and have access to a similarly large number of courses from other schools and programs at Yale. MEM students have the option to enroll in any of eight Specializations. The Specializations represent key areas of student interest, as well as emerging or enduring career fields within environmental management. Water Resource Science and Management: More than one quadrillion gallons of the world?s freshwater is appropriated each year to support agriculture, industry, mining, and urbanization. These thirsty culprits, together with climate change, have stressed the global supply and quality of water, imperiling human health and the functioning of freshwater and coastal ecosystems alike. Mitigating water scarcity and pollution relies on management approaches and policy levers that reflect the most recent advances in scientific understanding and on skill in forecasting ecosystem responses and socio-economic consequences of potential management and policy actions. The purpose of this specialization is to build student expertise in the science, policy, and management of water resources in preparation for careers that call for solutions to challenges posed by the world?s emerging and longstanding water-related issues. Students seeking employment within federal and state environmental agencies (e.g., USGS, USEPA, DEP), environmental non-governmental organizations (e.g., WRI, Nature Conservancy), international development agencies, local and interstate watershed commissions, industry, and environmental consulting firms should consider this specialization.
