The Master of Environmental Management curriculum draws from coursework in the natural and social sciences and focuses on the complex relationships among science, management, and policy. The purpose of the program is to provide students with a scientific understanding of ecological and social systems that can be applied in a policy or management context. Students are also expected to hone their capacities as leaders and managers through summer internships, professional skills courses, and other opportunities. The MEM curriculum is flexible enough to allow students to tailor their course of study in a way that builds on their interests and experiences and that meets their specific career goals. MEM students can choose from more than one hundred courses offered by F&ES faculty and have access to a similarly large number of courses from other schools and programs at Yale. MEM students have the option to enroll in any of eight Specializations. The Specializations represent key areas of student interest, as well as emerging or enduring career fields within environmental management. This specialization examines the relationships among production, consumption, sustainability, design, and industrial ecology in diverse settings, from products to firms to cities to international trade flows. This understanding needs to be systematic?to avoid shifting problems from one domain to another. Rather than examine environmental questions in isolation, industrial ecology and green design rely on integrating across energy, water, and materials and considering impacts to air, water, and land. Crucial to this pursuit is a rigorous understanding of how resources are used in society and the impact of our technological society on the biophysical environment. Students in the specialization in industrial ecology and green design are preparing for both professional pursuits and further academic study. The specialization will prepare students for employment in corporate sustainability and environment, health and safety positions, in environmental consultancies and think-tanks, nongovernmental organizations, and governmental and multi-lateral agencies.
