Our MSci Computer Games Technology has been devised with input from leading professionals to develop the skills you need to be successful in the games industry and beyond. You will learn a range of technical and professional skills, including understanding fundamentals and advanced ‘coding’ practices, graphics programming, network communications and artificial intelligence. The course is intended not only to expose you to mainstream and traditional game development, but also to working in allied and emerging disciplines such as serious and educational game development, augmented and virtual reality and simulations. Located at our City Centre Campus in the heart of Birmingham, we are close to many independent game studios. We also participate in international game development competitions such as Global Game Jam and Microsoft’s Imagine Cup, which give you the opportunity to showcase your talent on a wider stage. You will work in state-of-the-art computing facilities, including a dedicated computer games development lab. This houses high specification game development PCs, Sony PlayStation Dev Kits and a range of industry standard software. In 2017, we are spending £8.7 million on improvements to our facilities so you’ll have even more access to dedicated, industry-standard equipment. Choosing to study the MSci integrated Master’s degree programme will enable you to stand out from the crowd on graduation with a Master’s level qualification. You will also undertake a final year project which will help you to develop advanced technical and professional skills.

Foundation years/Year 0 courses: Foundation years (sometimes called Year 0 courses) are designed for students who don’t meet the entry requirements for a particular degree course, and enable them to develop their learning to an appropriate standard in preparation for Year 1 of the degree.Foundation degrees: If your qualifications are slightly below those required for direct entry onto a Bachelor’s degree, Foundation degrees may offer an alternative route to a full undergraduate degree.Higher National Certificates/Higher National Diplomas: Higher National Certificates (HNC) and Higher National Diplomas (HND) are vocational qualifications which often include practical elements as well as theory. It is often possible to ‘top up’ these qualifications to a Bachelor’s degree through further relevant study.Certificate/Diploma in Higher Education: These are similar to HNC and HND qualifications in terms of levels of study achieved. They can potentially be ‘topped up’ to a full Bachelor’s degree in a related subject area.Bachelor’s degree: This is a full undergraduate degree qualification. Bachelor’s degrees normally take three or four years to complete on a full-time basis - they can also be studied part-time.
