Dietitians make a vital contribution to people's health and wellbeing. You’ll develop skills in critical evaluation and adaptability to prepare for the changing dynamics of working in health and social care.  

As part of this course, you’ll:

  • Explore the composition of food, the nature of nutrients and their metabolism in the body, nutritional requirements throughout the lifespan and the dietary effects of food on health
  • Learn how to work alongside service users with acute and chronic disease in hospitals and primary care settings
  • Prepare to meet the responsibilities and expectations associated with being a healthcare professional
  • Consider the ethical and legal boundaries arising from exercising a professional duty of care
  • Occupational Health clearance and compliance with standard NHS immunisations requirements is mandatory and essential for placement attendance.

The HCPC (Health & Care Professions Council) regulates dietetics. The title of Dietitian is protected by law. This means that anyone who uses this designated title must be on the HCPC Register. Successful completion of this course will give you the eligibility to apply for registration with the HCPC after you graduate. 

This course is also accredited by BDA (The British Dietetic Association).

Applicants should normally have a science degree with at least a 2:1 classification which contains sufficient level and depth of biochemistry and human physiology as well as research skills and methodology. Biochemistry and human physiology should be studied to at least level 4 and an integration and application of these two subject areas to be studied to at least level 5. Research skills are also required to be studied to level 6 including a research project or dissertation. 

Applicants with a lower second class (2:2) will be considered on an individual basis depending on their overall transcript and experience they can demonstrate. Applicants who have achieved over 50% in the human science modules and / or have gained relevant work or voluntary experience with vulnerable communities and can demonstrate the skills achieved from this and how it matches the skills and behaviours required of health care professionals will be considered. Candidates who do not meet the requirements for biochemistry and human physiology will be advised about appropriate courses / modules they can take prior to admission to the course.


A supporting statement forms part of the selection process and is assessed prior to shortlisting for interview. You are encouraged to use the full 1000 word count and add this to your application, but do not exceed this, to relate your experiences to the required criteria, which are:

  • A commitment to dietetics and working as a dietitian in the NHS and how this has developed.
  • An awareness of the varied role and duties of a dietitian in different settings.
  • Developing communication skills and evidence of experiences where communication skills have been used or adapted for people from a range of backgrounds including in teamwork.
  • Demonstrating an interest in and ability to work with people in a care setting and recognise own strengths, weaknesses and challenges for working in this environment.
  • An interest and enjoyment of food, including basic food preparation and cooking skills and exposure to the diversity and enjoyment of food in a multi-cultural society.
  • Evidence of overcoming obstacles or challenges in your personal or professional life and the relevance of this for your future studies.
