Mental health nurses stand alongside people at some of the most vulnerable, complex, and challenging moments of their lives. On this BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing degree, you’ll gain the knowledge, practical expertise, and confidence to become a registered mental health nurse who leads with compassion and clinical excellence.

You’ll explore the biological, psychological, and social factors that shape mental health and wellbeing, developing a deep understanding of how these perspectives connect in practice. From supporting individuals in crisis to promoting long-term recovery, you’ll learn how to assess needs, build powerful therapeutic relationships, and deliver person-centred, evidence-based care. 

As part of this course, you’ll:

  • Build expertise in mental health theory, research-informed practice, and person-centred care 
  • Develop hands-on skills in our specialist simulation facilities 
  • Complete diverse professional placements across NHS and voluntary sector settings, applying your learning in real multidisciplinary teams 
  • Work alongside professionals such as adult nurses, social workers, and dietitians, understanding how collaborative care improves outcomes 
  • Learn directly from lived experience, engaging with service users to deepen your empathy, cultural awareness, and professional resilience  

Occupational Health clearance and compliance with standard NHS immunisations requirements are mandatory for placement attendance.

GCSE English Language, Maths and Science at Grade 4 or above (Grade C for GCSEs taken before 2017) or equivalent. Key Skills Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2 and the Certificate in Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy are accepted in place of GCSEs. Please note the GCSE science requirement can also be met through a range of level 3 science qualifications including A levels, BTEC and Access to HE Diplomas.

Access to HE Diploma Pass overall with a minimum of 112 UCAS tariff points.

T Levels Pass overall with a minimum of 112 UCAS tariff points, including a C or above on the core.

Scottish Awards 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 4 Highers of which at least 2 must be grade B or above.

Irish Leaving Certificate 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 5 subjects at higher level of which at least 3 must be grade H3 or above.

International baccalaureate 112 tariff points or a score of 28 from the IB diploma. This should include a minimum of 3 Highers with 2 at grade H5 or above.

Interview Required We conduct interviews as part of the admissions process and suitable applicants will be invited to an online interview.

Applicants will be required to provide photographic ID (Passport, Driving Licence) and original certificates for all qualifications awarded to date. If you do not possess your original certificates, we recommend making arrangements to obtain copies in preparation should you be invited to interview.

Students will be recruited on the basis that their values align with those of the NHS Constitution, as well as having the right skills and aptitude, in accordance with Value Based Recruitment (Health Education England, Value Based Recruitment Framework, October 2014) and if selected will need to take part in interview. At interview you will be tested on the values which promote quality care and a positive patient, staff and student experience.

IELTS 7.0 with no skills below 6.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.
