What is building services engineering (BSE)?

Building services engineering, also called engineering services, helps clients develop systems and solve problems to provide safe and healthy environments in which people can live and work. Engineering services play an integral part in the comfort and sustainability of modern-day living. 

As part of this course, you'll:

  • Gain expertise in the analysis of the mechanical and electrical engineering systems within buildings
  • Study the techniques behind low-carbon design and renewable energy systems
  • Learn how to use industry standard design and energy analysis software applications
  • Turn client briefs and concept designs into reality
  • Learn how to recognise the complex needs of diverse clients and unfamiliar environments

GCSEs GCSE English Language and Maths at Grade 4 or above (Grade C for GCSEs taken before 2017) or equivalent. Key Skills Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2 and the Certificate in Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy are accepted in place of GCSEs.

Access to HE Diploma Pass overall with a minimum of 112 UCAS tariff points to include 15 merits in science and 15 merits in maths.

T Levels Pass overall with a minimum of 112 UCAS tariff points, including a C or above on the core in a relevant subject.

Scottish Awards 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 4 Highers of which at least 2 must be grade B or above to include at least 80 points from maths and science subjects.

Irish Leaving Certificate 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 5 subjects at higher level of which at least 3 must be grade H3 or above to include at least 80 points from maths and science subjects.

International baccalaureate 112 tariff points to include a minimum of 3 Highers with 2 at grade H5 or above to include at least 80 points from maths and science subjects.

IELTS IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

Additional entry requirements:

Level 5 & 6 Entry: Applicants should have a HNC, HND or Foundation Degree in a cognate area, e.g. Building Services, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering. The point of entry will be determined by the course team in line with the Professional Body requirements.
