The BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy studies at the Metropolitan College focus on the application of theory in practice. For this reason, students perform clinical training from the very first year of their studies. The objective of the Occupational Therapy Bachelor is to form professionals who are in a position to offer their services to people of all ages whose lives have been disrupted by physical injury, development problems, old age as well as social and emotional problems, in order to regain the skills that are necessary for functional independence, health and well-being. Drawing on the theoretical and research background from the fields of medicine, psychology, neurology, pathology, sociology, anthropology, etc., Occupational Therapy is the science that aims to improve and restore skills that are necessary for living independently, such as self-care, work, entertainment, activities at home and in the community.
The Occupational Therapy Department of the Metropolitan College covers the subject matter of studying the individual’s functional activities in the areas of self-care and productivity, identification of dysfunctional elements and specialised ergotherapeutic intervention, aiming to achieve the best level of functionality and adaptive behaviour possible, so that they successfully resume the functional roles of their lives.
The occupational therapist’s profession has been characterised as “One of the 10 professions in high demand” (careerbuilder.com), “The best professional career” (U.S. News & World Report) and “A profession with 2% unemployment” (CNNMoney). Occupational Therapists work with each person individually, in groups or at a family and community level, aiming to promote health and well-being through their participation or re-engagement with activities and work.
More specifically, they engage in dealing with the repercussions of the disease or disability that contribute to any kind of exclusion from living independently at all levels of a person’s daily life (individual, social, family, professional, etc.), by conducting a detailed analysis of the physical, environmental, psychosocial, intellectual and cultural factors that hinder the execution of a task and by suggesting relevant adjustments.
Since 2014, the Metropolitan College has been a full member of the European Network of Occupational Therapy in Higher Education (ENOTHE). In this capacity it participates earnestly in the activities of the European Network of Occupational Therapy in Higher Education. In 2019 it hosted the annual ENOTHE Occupational Therapy International Conference in Athens.
Additionally, Metropolitan College is one of the main partners of the Erasmus+ funded “Leisure Skills Project”, an initiave aiming to develop and improve the management skills of leisure time of people with mental and/or developmental difficulties.
