The QIST CDT boasts a bespoke training model, an evolution of the decade-long Quantum Engineering CDT, tailored to the training needs of QIST that disrupts the tradition of training PhD graduates for academic careers. At the core of the programme you will receive cutting-edge training in experimental and theoretical quantum information and quantum technologies. Furthermore, you will receive specialised training in entrepreneurship, project management, academic practice, science policy, and communication skills. Uniquely this CDT allows students to design their own PhD project after the first year of being immersed in the breadth of quantum research at the University. This holistic programme will hone your ability to work effectively in diverse teams, with peers from varied backgrounds in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering and computer science.
The first year of the programme is a balance of taught courses, seminars, workshops, and group and independent research projects, with both theoretical and practical aspects. This training offers a first-class foundation for developing and completing a PhD project with our wide range of academic and non-academic supervisors and partners. This cohort approach to learning creates an environment that is both stimulating and empowering. It also supports the creation, growth and development of personal and professional networks from the first day, broadening your knowledge and enabling you to put your research into context.
The QIST CDT training extends beyond the first year, with cohort and cross-cohort activities, alongside multiple chances to explore professional opportunities, from academic secondments, to industrial placements and internships with our partners working on science communication, outreach, science policy and entrepreneurship.

Admission Requirements
An upper second-class degree (or international equivalent) in physics, electrical engineering, computer science, maths, chemistry or in other relevant physical sciences.
English language requirements
If English is not your first language, you will need to reach the requirements outlined in our profile level C.
