This is a one-year, full-time degree programme aimed at qualified dental clinicians looking to develop competency in clinical oral medicine. It focuses on the recognition, investigation, diagnosis and management of patients presenting with common oral and maxillofacial diseases and will provide a sound grounding in the fundamental principles of UK specialist practice. It also considers and incorporates the basic principles of evidence-based medicine that are relevant to clinical and modern translational practice.

Contemporary educational methods will be used to determine and monitor knowledge base, as well as using workplace-based assessments for clinical competency. You will be supervised by clinical and academic staff within an established and integrated specialist clinical training and educational environment. The clinical teaching will be delivered within the Oral Medicine Department at Bristol Dental Hospital whilst the classroom based teaching will be delivered within the Bristol Dental School. There will be continuous verbal feedback and support to help develop skills for individual reflection and self-assessment.

There are high staff to student ratios to ensure a quality individual teaching experience during clinical activity. Working side by side with clinical experts and specialist clinical and academic trainees you will build a clinical portfolio.

You will undertake a scoping literature review, leading to the submission of a dissertation.

'I have very rarely, if ever, taken verbal examinations. This changed when I came to Bristol. Being examined by world-renowned, well-published academics is daunting but by the end of the year, I felt uniquely prepared to tackle any clinical questions. So when asked how far I’ve come clinically since before I got to Bristol, it's as far as the east is from the west.'
