The course provides a broad training in the major theories, methods and practices in archaeology and anthropology. The topics will cover from the earliest human ancestors to complex societies, from Bristol to the South Pacific. Students will learn critical skills in archaeological and anthropological methods, analysis and interpretation. There are also opportunities for excavation and anthropological fieldwork. During Year One, students will be introduced to the fundamental theories of the two disciplines. Students will take units that introduce them to the disciplines of archaeology and material culture studies, as well as social, linguistic and biological anthropology. Years two and three allow greater specialisation in skills, regional foci and current debates. There are a wide variety of optional units that explore particular themes, periods and geographical areas. Students will be familiarized with the range of research methods and theoretical frameworks employed and the sorts of questions archaeologists and anthropologists ask. In the third year, students will write a dissertation and produce their own original research.
