RELIGION AS A DYNAMIC AND TRANSNATIONAL PHENOMENON
The one-year master's program Religion and Society focuses on the phenomenon of religion in the public domain. You will study the constantly changing role of religion, in different cultures and societies. The starting point of most courses is the Western European context, but there is also explicit attention for religion as a transnational and global phenomenon.
DIVERSE, COMPLEX AND CONTROVERSIAL
The Western European religious landscape has changed dramatically in recent decades. Certain religious institutions have lost much of their former influence. At the same time, religion in its material form (such as buildings and clothing) is still visible in the public domain. We also see new forms of religion emerging that are often highly individual and experiential. As a result of migration, 'new' religious traditions are emerging in the European context and the expressions of religion have become more diverse, their social roles more complex and often controversial.
RELIGION IN CONFLICTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Religion also plays a prominent role worldwide, for example in development issues. Conflicts in different parts of the world are seen as religious phenomena. In discussions about gender, (homo)sexuality, epidemics or natural disasters, a religious vocabulary is used.
