To succeed, civil engineers must couple creativity and originality with a deep understanding of technical topics as well as broader areas such as sustainability, design and management. On our civil engineering degrees you will study core subjects such as structural, fluid and soil mechanics, engineering design, and maths; as well as emerging subjects crucial to the future of society such as climate change; resource usage and management; and intelligent and futureproof infrastructure. These are blended with our specialisms and optional subjects such as energy supply, fire safety engineering and legal issues to provide a unique and highly sought after engineering education. In your first two years you will focus on developing fundamental abilities that underpin your later study and future career. There is a mix of theoretical knowledge coupled with practical experience. Traditional lectures are supplemented by outstanding blended learning resources that allow for online study at any time. Highlights include designing, building and testing bridges in first year, and a field trip in second year where your design for a hydro-power scheme must be laid out on the ground using GPS surveying and mapping techniques. The later years of your degree include further theoretical material but with an emphasis now on applying your knowledge to a series of increasingly challenging and realistic design projects. In third year you undertake an dissertation on a subject of your choice, with individual supervision from an academic with relevant expertise. On the MEng programmes, your fourth year contains two design projects undertaken with industrial mentors, and a selection of optional courses, allowing you to tailor your degree to your interests and career plans. Our curriculum is set out in detail here , where full details of all our civil engineering courses and modules are given. Years 1 and 2 of this course are common with those of the MEng in Civil Engineering. Subject to satisfactory performance, it is possible for students to transfer from the BEng course onto one of our MEng courses at the end of their second year.
