As one of Europe's most creative and diverse civilisations, Italy has a fascinating and influential history. Many of the basic concepts underlying Western society found expression for the first time in Latin, the language from which modern Italian derives.
Studying Italian and classics helps us understand the contemporary world, and also sheds light on the past.
Our joint honours programme incorporates a range of option courses. We are also unique in Scotland in offering students a full academic year abroad within the four-year honours programme, regardless of whether you spend the year studying or working.
When you graduate, you will have the combination of a broad cultural education and specialist knowledge valued by employers around the globe.
Italian
Study Italian with us, and you will learn the language in the context of Italian culture. Courses cover some of the most famous and influential works of literature, art and cinema.
No previous knowledge of Italian is needed. Intensive language tuition, including a year spent studying or working in Italy, will develop your ability to read, write and speak the language to a high standard with advanced translation skills.
Italian has been taught here since 1919, and has been part of our tradition for many years, as far back as the 18th century. From our own Italian Society to the Italian Cultural Institute, you will find many places in Edinburgh to develop your interest in Italian culture.
Classics
You will explore the highly influential scholarship and literature of the classical world that gave rise to Western society, opting to take a Latin, Ancient Greek or non-language pathway through Classics.

- Go abroad for the first of your honours years - Year 3
- Build up to fluency in the Italian language, and specialise in different aspects of Italian studies and classics as you move through your degree.
