The Mathematical Physics degree programme is designed to give you a thorough grounding both in the fundamental theories of physics and the mathematical concepts needed to formulate, understand and develop them.

Mathematical Physics covers a very broad range of subjects. For example:

  • string theory
  • cosmology
  • particle physics
  • physics of materials
  • complex systems
  • computational physics

It would take a lifetime to describe in detail all the rich variety of physical phenomena which make up modern physics.

In Mathematical Physics, we provide you with the tools to solve problems and grasp fundamental principles in depth.

Alongside developing your critical thinking, the skills you acquire will enable you to specialise in whatever area of physics you choose, either theoretical or experimental.

These skills also prove invaluable in many other areas outside physics, for instance in:

  • engineering
  • computing
  • finance
  • business
  • management

Unique to the Mathematical Physics degree programme is that you will be taking courses both from the School of Physics and Astronomy and from the School of Mathematics.

Compared to the BSc, our MPhys Mathematical Physics programme provides a broader and deeper exposure to the concepts, methods and phenomena of physics. You will also gain experience of research work through an extended project. This provides a foundation for further research studies in physics.
