Spanish is the official language in 20 countries and is widely spoken in four more territories, including the United States. As well as having over 400 million native speakers, it is spoken as a second language by around nine million people, globally, making it an excellent partner subject to Business.

We are unique in Scotland in offering students a full academic year abroad within the four-year honours programme, regardless of whether you spend the year studying or working.

Spanish

Spanish at Edinburgh celebrated its centenary in 2019. Our wide-ranging courses are taught by leading experts in their field.

You will receive intensive language training, giving you the opportunity to develop advanced spoken and written skills in the Spanish language. You will also learn how to discern different varieties and registers of the language and gain intercultural awareness.

You will be invited to explore the diverse and rich cultures of Spain, Latin America and the Caribbean through an extraordinary range of literature, film, poetry and theatre, studied in its historical context.

Business

Studying business will prepare you for the social, political, environmental and cultural challenges facing contemporary businesses, governments and not-for-profit organisations.

Taught by world-leading industry professionals and researchers, you will develop personal and professional competencies, such as:

  • authentic leadership
  • ethical, responsible, sustainable business behaviour
  • entrepreneurial practice
  • effective communication

The Business School Student Development team will also provide opportunities for you to develop a range of essential business graduate competencies. Developing these will enable you to work across a range of roles in contemporary business including:

  • finance
  • strategy
  • innovation
  • marketing
  • human resource management
  • data analytics
  • entrepreneurship

Business or International Business?

This programme is a more wide-ranging alternative to the International Business with Spanish programme. Alongside courses in local and global business, you will study Spanish and associated cultures over the full four years, and be able to take more option courses in Years 1 and 2.

During your Year Abroad in Year 3, you will complete an independent piece of research on a contemporary business issue relating to the country in which you are studying or working.

In Year 4, in addition to Spanish language and cultural study, you will choose three honours-level courses from options on different aspects of business.

When you graduate, you will have the combination of broad cultural education and specialist business and language skills valued by employers worldwide.

Programme benefits

  • Study over four years, giving you the choice and flexibility to try out different things.
  • Go abroad for the first of your honours years - Year 3.
  • Build up to fluency in a major global language, and specialise in different aspects of Spanish and Latin American studies and business as you move through your degree.
  • Gain accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS).
  • Learn in an historic city where we have taught Spanish for over a century.
  • Join societies, attend events, and gain the skills and confidence for life after university.
