Infectious diseases shape our world, posing complex challenges to global healthcare, economies, and societies. Understanding how these diseases emerge, spread and can be controlled is essential to improving human and animal health worldwide.


This interdisciplinary degree programme explores the fascinating relationships between pathogens and their hosts and how these interactions cause disease. You will study a wide range of pathogens, including:


  • viruses

  • protozoa
  • nematodes
  • fungi


You will discover how these pathogens adapt, survive and impact populations.


You will be taught by leading researchers working on global health challenges, benefitting from lectures, tutorials and hands-on lab work.


In your final year, you will carry out an independent research project, developing the scientific and problem-solving skills that prepare you for a career in research, medicine, biotechnology or public health.


Graduates of this programme have a strong understanding of infectious diseases and the skills to contribute to solving some of the most urgent challenges of our time. Graduates go on to careers and further study in:

Our Infectious Diseases degree is part of our suite of Biomedical Sciences degrees. In all programmes, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of biomedical sciences in Years 1 and 2 and then choose from a suite of more specialist courses in Year 3.
