Civil engineers solve complex problems and are skilled at working in interdisciplinary teams to tackle society's challenges.
Civil engineers shape our built environment. They enable taller skyscrapers, net zero buildings and more efficient transport networks in the busiest cities, or bring fresh water and reliable infrastructure to the remotest parts of the planet.
Civil engineering involves:
- creatively applying your physics and mathematics knowledge to deliver unique solutions to complex problems
- selecting and using the appropriate engineering and computational tools to ensure safe and sustainable solutions
- using your advanced knowledge of civil engineering materials to select the correct solution for the required application
United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals
Based on our compulsory course material, this degree aligns with many of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the top three being:
- SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
- SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Programme aims
This programme will train you to be a civil engineer for the future, giving you the knowledge and skills you need to shape and sustain our ever-changing world.
You will have the opportunity to specialise in many technical streams, including:
- structural engineering
- environmental engineering
- construction management
- fire safety engineering
We put a strong emphasis on engineering design, both individually and in groups, throughout this degree programme.
Ties to industry
We have strong industrial engagement through our Industrial Advisory Board and industrial input to our teaching, including our design projects.
Programme benefits
- An enviable suite of facilities including specialist laboratories, a student makerspace and cutting-edge industry-standard equipment.
- Opportunities to interact with recent graduates who are now working in industry.
- Research-led teaching by leaders in their engineering fields whose knowledge is actively sought out by industry and government internationally.
- Our unique programmes give you a broad and detailed understanding of civil and environmental engineering, setting you up to work in any field you choose after graduation.
- Field trips, design-led and team-oriented teaching approaches, and strong engagement with industry which informs our teaching.
