Italian has been studied at the University of Edinburgh since the eighteenth century, and the first lectureship in the subject was established in 1919. More than a century on, our expertise spans a broad area of study, from medieval to contemporary culture.
We offer a distinctive, interdisciplinary environment where Italian can be explored through one or more approaches:
- critical
- creative
- practice-led
We connect literature, media, philosophy, and politics with cutting-edge research in the environmental and digital humanities.
Over the course of your PhD, you will complete an original body of work under the expert guidance of at least two supervisors. Your thesis will be around 80,000 words.
Our programme includes access to skills training, including research methodologies specific to Italian studies. Our research collections, resources and facilities are outstanding.
