In the Master of Cyber Security, you will engage in various authentic and work-integrated learning activities across your degree, including completing a significant industry project or industry research experience. This allows you to apply your knowledge and skills to protect information assets from harm, using security measures appropriate for a given environment.

Master programming fundamentals
You will begin your studies learning about the components of digital information systems, beginning with programming fundamentals - mastering essential coding skills - before focusing on rapid web development with databases. You will learn to identify vulnerabilities in vital computer systems and creatively solve complex problems through systems innovation and design to reduce the risk that information assets are harmed.

Explore advanced topics in cyber security

As you transition to advanced core units, you will explore topics such as cyber security and governance, understanding the principles for information security management within organisations. You will master the software development life cycle and embrace human-centred design of IT systems to create secure, user-friendly technology.  

As part of your cyber security specialisation, you will develop an understanding of computer networks and security and the importance of considering human factors to mitigate risks people pose to cyber security. You can customise your learning by choosing from subjects including applied cryptography, blockchain technology, and ethical hacking.

Admission Requirements

Entry requirements 2 year program You must have a recognised bachelor degree (or higher qualification) in any discipline with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.00 (on QUT's 7 point scale).
1.5 year program* You must have one of:
  • A recognised bachelor degree (or higher qualification) in information technology with a minimum grade point average (GPA) score of 4.00 (on QUT's 7 point scale); or
  • A recognised bachelor degree in any other discipline with a minimum grade point average (GPA) score of 4.00 (on QUT's 7 point scale) followed by three full-time years (or equivalent) of professional work experience in information technology.^
  ^ If applying on the basis of work experience you must submit a detailed CV, position details, and employment statements. All work experience must be after completion of your degree studies.
* Note: As part of QUT’s application for admission process, you will be automatically assessed for the 1.5 year program, if eligible. If you wish to be considered for the 2 year program only, please indicate this on your application form
