Creative writing goes outside the bounds of professional, journalistic, academic or technical forms of literature. It’s typically identified by an emphasis on narrative craft, character development and the use of literary figures. Studying creative writing allows for artistic self-expression, and will help you to better understand the mechanics of reading and writing. The Creative Writing major equips you with both theoretical knowledge and practice-based skills. You’ll learn about the production and publishing contexts in which writing occurs, as well as the cultural and social issues that shape writing in Australia and internationally. You’ll study fiction, poetry, non-fiction, scriptwriting and writing for the digital environment. Applied writing units contain a workshop component where you develop your creative concepts and put them into practice through writing, revising and responding to feedback.
