Research shows there are benefits of second language learning that exceed a student’s own linguistic abilities. Second language learning provides cognitive benefits that help to support academic achievement and improve beliefs about other cultures. Teacher candidates complete language and culture courses in the College of Arts and Science including at least 34 semester hours above the 202 level in German. For the education portion of the degree, we utilize a cohort-based approach to teaching methods and pedagogy for each language taught in the department. We offer two teaching methods courses to instruct teacher candidates on effective language teaching strategies. All German Education students are required to participate in a study abroad program. The foreign language education licensure for grades K-12 leads most graduates into primary, middle school or high school teaching positions.
