Medical lab scientists are professional healthcare team members who apply their skills to an ever-broadening range of complex laboratory diagnostic and research activities. Graduates may opt to be a general medical lab scientist or specialize in fields like hematology, clinical chemistry, toxicology, bacteriology, parasitology, and immunology. This program includes an interdisciplinary blend of classes in chemistry, microbiology, and zoology. The required courses include general chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, general biology, general microbiology, molecular biology, mathematics/statistics, and completion of a foreign language at second-year level. After becoming professionally certified, medical laboratory scientists generally work in hospital laboratories, private laboratories, public health laboratories, industrial laboratories, research institutions, teaching institutions, and in medical programs sponsored by such groups as the Peace Corps and Project Hope.
