If you are dedicated to creating better ways to feed or fuel the world now and in the future, studying crop science can ensure that you have a hand in the development of new, sustainable methods of agriculture for Oregon and the world. You'll gain practical experience in quality breeding methods, seed technology, entomology, weed management techniques and more. The department of Crop and Soil Sciences partners with growers across the state and around the U.S. to identify and solve challenges to crops from invasive pests to water use technology. Our goals are to increase the safe, sustainable production of food crops for people and animals, as well as energy crops, designed to generate power for our future energy needs. Areas of Specialization M.S. programs are organized around 3 main areas of specialization: Agronomy, Plant Breeding and Genetics, and Entomology. Within each specialization many academic disciplines are represented, including crop breeding and genetics, crop physiology and metabolism, crop production and management, agroecology & sustainability, ecophysiology, plant breeding and genetics, food systems, small farms, weed science, seed science & technology, pedology, water science, restoration ecology, entomology, pest management, biological control, plant nutrition, organic agriculture, and waste management. Additionally, regionally important commodities include: seed crops (grass, legume and native plants), cereals (wheat and barley), forages, hops, potatoes, onions, sugar beets, corn, beans, and alternative crops (oil seeds, fiber and medicinal crops).

Oregon State University offers assistantships to help students fund graduate school. To enroll as a graduate assistant, you are required to work 156 hours during a period of 13 weeks for a monthly salary of approximately US$3,800.
